Yara Khalil // To The Last Breath

 

"If you only have five minutes before your house get destroyed, what would you save? How does it feel to leave your house knowing you'll never return? To leave the past behind, along with your identity and your memories.

I remember myself since I was a little child, sitting and listening to my grandfather's stories about his experience as a refugee. 75 years have passed since then, and we still experience a constant attempt to erase our cultural memory and the impending demolishing of thousands of homes.In my project, I am dealing into the meaning of home, homeland, and return. Clinging to the past, the tradition, the culture, the olive trees in my grandfather's old house, his clothes, and the desire to preserve them in the consciousness of the present, is the driving force behind my source of inspiration for the final project.

I chose to create a collection for both, women, and men, by using symbols from Palestinian traditions that I myself, a Palestinian Identify with. My inspiration derives from my grandfather’s tailored clothes combined with denim and wool fabrics, like the clothes worn by refugees. I use vacuum sealing bags to preserve old clothes, this way I aspire to preserve my culture's identity and memory.
